Rep. Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) is the youngest woman member of the House, and the first woman elected to Congress from South Dakota. She won the at-large seat in a special election in 2004. At Georgetown, Stephanie was president of the College Democrats and Secretary for the College Democrats of America. She ran for CDA national president in 1991. Since then, Stephanie has stayed committed to working with College Democrats to this day.
CDAAA is now accepting grant applications for the 2009-2010 school year. Any College Democrats of America chapter or federation is welcome and encouraged to apply.
To apply:
1. Download the 2009-2010 CDAAA Grants Application.
2. E-mail it to grants@collegedemsalumni.com by September 1.
The College Democrats of America Alumni Association is looking for grant applications that explain, in detail, how you’re going to build out the infrastructure for your state federation or chapter. What do we mean by infrastructure? All too often, College Democrat groups change rapidly when seniors graduate and the next generation of leadership takes over. The new generation feels it has to reinvent the wheel—when in fact it should be able to rely on past progress made by previous College Democrats.
We want these grants to help change that. If you’re representing a state federation, we want you to explain how you’re going to build out your federation for years to come. If you’re representing a chapter, lay out a plan for making your chapter not just a gathering of like-minded students, but a powerful and enduring political institution.
Don’t propose a grant just to get money. If you put together a solid, well thought out plan, we’ll do our best to get you the money you need. Likewise, don’t feel obligated to request a lot of money. If you want a limited amount of money for a single project, write a good proposal and we’ll try and make it happen (that said, projects requiring more money may receive disbursements in blocks). Above all else, keep in mind that these grants should focus on creating infrastructure, the kind that can make College Democrats successful for years to come.
Good luck!
